A phono stage is designed primarily to amplify the low output from a pick-up cartridge (i.e. the needle which reads the record groove) to a level which a modern amplify can then use to send a signal to your speakers. Some amplifiers have this facility, but many don't, and the added convenience of a separate accessory is that you can upgrade and find the right model for your system and your ears.
